There are SO many uber-talented artists whose music transcends the labels or boundaries set upon them.
My sentiment isn't personal. Most of the songs I wrote for others or performed were, in fact, R&B songs. I do step outside once in a while.
Fact is, only black artists get held back by labels: "Urban" "Hip-Hop" & "R&B," no matter how versatile or wide the span of the music is.
This is not a new phenomenon. So don't be so quick to pinpoint a modern example. You'd be missing the WHOLE picture on the subject.
