It doesn't mean that we should ban rap music or forbid toy guns. I believe in free speech. It does mean that we can make better choices.
But if you grow up surrounded by gun violence, listen to music that promotes it, toys that normalize it, video games that enable it...
Many of these young men have been surrounded by real violence their whole lives. But they've also faced a media complex that normalizes it.
In my hometown of Philly, I work with young men to talk about conflict resolution, healthy problem solving, and alternatives to violence.
If we got rid of all toy guns, we'd still have violence. But that doesn't mean that we can't make healthy and responsible decisions.
For me, gun violence is a serious issue that must be addressed in many ways: legislative, social, cultural, etc...
